The Buffalo Nickel was introduced in 1913. James Earle Fraser, a native of Winona, Minnesota, created the design. He used his experiences growing up in the Upper Midwest and Central Plains in selecting designs representative of the indigenous tribes of North America.

On the obverse side of 1 oz Asahi Buffalo Silver Rounds is the bust of an indigenous figure. This tribal figure is shown with a stoic look and braided hair with feathers woven into it. An inscription of ??Liberty?? on this side reflects some of the original elements from the Buffalo Nickel. There is also an Asahi Mint mint mark.

The reverse field of Asahi Buffalo Silver Rounds features the iconic American bison. The largest land mammal in North America, the bison was vital to the culture and survival of the tribes that inhabited the American Plains. The American bison shown here is in left-profile relief on a mound of dirt with its large hump above its shoulders and shaggy mane captured in brilliant detail. Fraser used Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo in the 20th century, as inspiration for his design.
