The American Silver Eagle approached 5 million bullion coins produced for the first time in five years. In addition, the number of 1998 American Silver Eagle coins struck in total jumped for a second consecutive year, the first time the coin program had seen back-to-back years of growth since 1992-1993.

On the obverse of each 1998 American Silver Eagle coin is the image of Walking Liberty. Created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, it featured a full-length figure of Liberty as she walked toward the setting sun to represent the nation??s strive to discover a brighter tomorrow.

The reverse features a modernized version of the historic heraldic eagle of the United States. Refined by then-Chief Engraver of the John Mercanti, this heraldic eagle is now featured only on the American Silver Eagle.
