Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 original “Walking Liberty” inspired the coin’s obverse (front). Once the coin was introduced, collectors and enthusiasts flocked to it immediately because the iconic design was already popular among the general public. John Mercanti created the reverse (back), which featured a heraldic eagle behind a shield. The eagle, reminiscent of the Great Seal of the United States, is holding a banner in its beak, an olive branch in its right talon, and arrows in its left. Thirteen five-pointed stars, standing in for the original Thirteen Colonies, are displayed above the eagle and the legend.
